Blocked weep holes and trapped roof moisture

If you get a slow leak near the peak of a ceiling even in light rain, the culprit is often a set of tiny drainage holes most homeowners never knew existed.

What weep holes do

When a roofer points the ridge tiles, they deliberately leave small, nail-sized gaps in the mortar every thirty centimetres or so. These weep holes are exit drains: in a storm, any rain forced under the ridge caps runs out safely onto the main roof.

How blocking them causes leaks

If a DIY repair or an unqualified worker seals these holes over, water can no longer escape. It pools behind the concrete bedding, builds up, and eventually overflows into the ceiling cavity — showing up as plaster stains near the ridge line.

The fix

The repair is to clear or correctly re-form the weep holes when re-pointing, so the ridge can drain and breathe. It is simple, but it has to be done by someone who knows the holes are meant to be there.
